The Power of a "Can Do" and "Will Do" Mentality: How to Develop a Winning Attitude

When it comes to success mentalities, there is one conversation that comes up, in some way shape or form, quite often. It’s the idea of a “Can Do” Mentality vs, that of a “Will Do” mentality. These might not seem very different at first glance, but I promise, there is a big difference.

If you want to achieve success in any area of your life, whether it be in your career, personal relationships, or personal growth, it's essential to have a positive and proactive mindset. One way to cultivate this type of mindset is to develop a "can do" mentality, which is characterized by a sense of confidence and determination. But having a "can do" mentality is not enough on its own. To truly achieve your goals and make things happen, you also need to have a "will do" mentality, which involves taking action and making an effort to turn your dreams into reality.

So, what is the difference between a "can do" mentality and a "will do" mentality, and how can you cultivate these attitudes in your own life?

A “Can Do” Mentality: The Power of Confidence

A "can do" mentality is all about believing in your ability to successfully complete a task or achieve a goal. It's the conviction that you have what it takes to overcome any challenges or obstacles that may come your way.

Having a "can do" mentality is essential for success because it gives you the confidence to take on new challenges and try new things. When you believe in yourself and your abilities, you are more likely to take risks and pursue opportunities that may lead to growth and success.

However, it's important to note that a "can do" mentality is not the same as arrogance or overconfidence. It's not about thinking you are better than others or that you can do no wrong. Instead, it's about having a healthy level of self-belief and being open to learning and improving.

So, how can you develop a "can do" mentality? Here are a few tips:

  1. Practice positive self-talk: The way you talk to yourself can have a big impact on your confidence and belief in your abilities. Instead of focusing on your weaknesses or limitations, try to focus on your strengths and what you have achieved in the past.

  2. Set Small, Achievable Goals: One way to build your confidence is to set small, achievable goals and work towards them. As you complete these goals, your confidence will grow, and you'll be more likely to take on bigger challenges.

  3. Learn From Your Mistakes: Instead of dwelling on your failures or shortcomings, try to view them as learning opportunities. Reflect on what you could have done differently and use that knowledge to improve in the future.

The “Can Do” Mentality can only take you so far on your journey to success. Knowledge and confidence are important, but these are nothing without action

I have seen these people first hand. So smart with SO MUCH potential, but it falls short…

Knowledge is not power. Knowledge is POTENTIAL power.

A "Will Do" Mentality: The Power of Action

While a "can do" mentality is essential for building confidence and belief in your abilities, it's not enough on its own. To truly achieve your goals and make things happen, you also need to have a "will do" mentality, which involves taking action and making an effort to turn your dreams into reality.

A "will do" mentality is characterized by determination and a willingness to take on challenges and make things happen. It's about being proactive and not letting fear or hesitation hold you back.

So, how can you develop a "will do" mentality? Here are a few tips:

  1. Make a Plan: Before you can take action, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. Make a plan that outlines the steps you need to take to reach your goal.

  2. Take the First Step: Once you have a plan in place, it's time to take the first step. This can be the most challenging part, but it's also the most important. By taking the first step, you are showing yourself that you are committed to making things happen. (“The Physics of Psychology: Getting Started”)

  3. Take Action Every Day: To maintain a "will do" mentality, it's important to take consistent action towards your goals. This doesn't mean you need to work on your goals all day every day, but it does mean making a daily effort to move closer to your goals.

  4. Don't Let Setbacks Hold You Back: No matter how determined you are, you will encounter setbacks and challenges along the way. It's important not to let these setbacks discourage you or make you give up. Instead, view them as temporary roadblocks and find a way to overcome them.

Combining a "Can Do" and "Will Do" Mentality

While a "can do" mentality and a "will do" mentality are two distinct attitudes, they are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are most powerful when they are combined. When you have both a "can do" mentality and a "will do" mentality, you have a winning combination that can help you achieve success in any area of your life.

So, how can you cultivate both a "can do" mentality and a "will do" mentality? Here are a few tips:

  1. Practice Gratitude: One way to cultivate a positive mindset is to practice gratitude. This means focusing on the things you are thankful for, rather than dwelling on negative thoughts or circumstances. By cultivating gratitude, you can help to build a sense of confidence and determination.

  2. Surround Yourself With positive influences: The people you spend time with can have a big impact on your mindset and attitude. Surround yourself with people who are positive, supportive, and have a "can do" and "will do" mentality.

  3. Take Care of Yourself: To cultivate a positive and proactive mindset, it's important to take care of yourself physically and mentally. This includes getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and finding healthy ways to manage stress.

Conclusion

If you want to succeed, you need to do something different than the masses. Having a “Will Do” mentality needs to exist in all parts of your life. Your thoughts, words, and actions must show that this is who you want to be.

Think about what you would like to take on that will help you to grow or stand out among your peers in a positive way.

Speak positively & confidently about yourself and your skill level. You need to be honest with yourself about what you can do today, but at the same time be confident that you can take on something that might normally be considered a stretch. Knowing that you have ability and mentality to get something done.

Act on what you say you’re going to do. A Will Do person puts up or shuts up. If you’re going to do something, make sure you do it and do it well and with a smile on your face when you’re done. Be PROUD of your mindset and ability to do something that maybe you didn’t think you could!
